So you have decided to create your own wedding stationery which will both cut down on expense and allow you to create something completely unique to your own wedding. The first thing you will need to do is research, by this I mean look at other peoples designs not to copy but just to give you inspiration for what you like as well as dislike. There are plenty of websites where you can look at free designs as well as professional handmade card companies. If you don't have the internet readily available there wedding magazines that can be purchased from most large newsagents and should hopefully give you some good ideas.
Theme and colour
If you are having a particular wedding theme such as a Beach, Fairy Tale, Victorian, or Hollywood theme, there will be elements you can take from the theme to incorporate into your design. If it's a beach theme then it could be sea shells, star fish, pieces of drift wood or even sand. The same applies for choosing colours you may want to coordinate the bridal and bridesmaid dresses, into the cards design or simply choose complimentary colours that match the theme.
Software
If you are going to print your own text you will need some type of software package to create your designs. If you have a pdf creator, Microsoft Word or a similar package installed it can be used to set up a simple template for create the text for printing. If on the other hand you are feeling a little more adventurous then there is a free package called Gimp available that you can download for creating anything from a basic text layout to a fully fledged work of art. Gimp isn't difficult to use and there are plenty of beginners tutorials online to help out and should you decide to incorporate printed imagery into your design you can do it all with this software.
Choosing a Font
A font is the lettering style and it's important to choose the right one for your wedding stationery should you decide to print the inserts and/or card fronts. There are many free fonts that can be downloaded as used for free if it's not for commercial use so there will be plenty of options to choose from. When selecting your font although there are some fantastically ornate ones available, just bear in mind that not all fonts are easily legible when they are used in small print.
Choosing a Verse
Some of us are gifted when it comes to the written verse and the words just seem to flow easily, so creating the text for the invites, menus, order of service and RSVP cards won't be a problem. For everyone else fortunately there is a wealth of resources online that allow you to download templates or simply copy and paste their text for use in your wedding stationery layout. Something that will save you a lot of time by doing first as opposed to last is to work out your verse, font and insert layout initially and do a trial print. You would be amazed at the number of people who spend a great deal of time creating their card covers without any thought of the printed content. Unfortunately when it comes to printing the epic masterpiece for the insert there simply isn't enough room, so it's back to the drawing board (which can be costly if you have to scrap all your hard work). Your inserts are a compromise of the printable area for the card insert versus font style and font size for legibility. Although some fonts are more suitable for small print than others, it's best to sensibly choose a card size that allows you to comfortably include all the printed text you require.
Card Stock
Card and paper stock thickness is measured in gsm, the standard budget paper most people use in your printers will be approximately 75-80gsm. While this may be ok for everyday printing if you intend to print on both sides of the paper then you may need something a little thicker (At least 100gsm). As regards the material used for the stationery cover again its better to use a thicker card stock so that it doesn't flop over when you try to pick it up or hold it open to read the contents.
Other things to consider
If your printer is inkjet then you need to consider which ink to use some of the cheaper inks smudge or run when the ink gets wet, and if the order of service is being used outdoors this could be a problem.
Colourful textured materials such as mulberry paper and embellishments are a great way to spice up your design whilst keeping the costs down.
To add some glitz and glamour to your designs you can use Swarovski Crystal rhinestones which are multi faceted crystals which are extremely sparkly and can be applied with craft adhesive.
Choose the right size envelopes for the cards being used and don't forget to include all the material costs in your planning to see if your card designs are within your set budget.
