Cigars are generally classified as mild, medium, or full bodied according to the cigar strength. The body means the impact the cigar smoke is supposed to have inside the smoker's mouth. It is difficult to measure the impact or strength because it is a subjective matter of perception. That is the reason cigars are often rated in the range ‘mild to medium' or ‘medium to full'. Cigar producers know what all types of tobaccos they have to use in order to achieve the desired degree of impact. The hard part or difficulty lies in blending them to acquire a pleasant balance between the desired taste and aroma.

Generally, tobacco cigars are measured by diameter and by length. Diameter size, also called as the ring gauge, is measured by taking the benchmark of 64th of an inch. Length is usually measured in inches. For instance, a 50x5 cigar has a ring gauge of 50 times 1/64th of an inch and is five inches long. Sometimes you will also see 5x50, which means the same measurements; do not be under the impression that the cigar is 50 inches long. If the cigar is not of a cylindrical shape, the ring gauge shown would be generally the bigger figure. For a torpedo, also called pyramidal, the smallest and the largest diameters of the truncated part might be mentioned as 36-54. Each one will be in a range of length and diameter. A ‘Robusto' is usually a 50x5 cigar, but the ring gauge of this particular one can vary in a 48-54 range and the length may vary between 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 inches.

Before these premium cigars are packed into the box, they are classified by the feature of colour so that all the tobacco cigars in the box look the same. It is a very tricky aspect and very few people are able to make such a differentiation and such a sharp sorting. A good ‘shader' may go up to 72 different colours or tones. This takes into consideration the criteria of brightness and shine. It is really fascinating to watch how they do it and how fast they can do it. In the process of manufacturing of cigars, fillers are handled dry and so they tend to be quite stiff. However, in order to make the bunch, the binder needs to be moistened so that it becomes flexible enough to wrap around; and, the same goes with the wrapper.

Hence, the binder supplies water to the fillers and thereafter the bunch becomes soft enough to be wrapped. The pressing time required helps it to get dried well before wrapping. In the same manner, the moistened wrapper will transmit water to the rest of the cigar stick. Again, a little bit of time for drying is necessary to reach the optimum moisture content level in the cigar. In fact, the time required to go through the quality control process is long enough for these tobacco cigars to be ready to be kept in the humidor.
