Facial Exfoliants: What, Why and How?
We do a great number of things to our skin with all kinds of skin care products, some of which can have beautiful rejuvenating effects, and others that really do nothing more but cause serious irritation, and there are those others that, well, simply don’t seem to do anything much, except cost us a lot of money (we're all guilty of shelling out for them)!
Regardless of what skin care products we use, or how we go about our daily beauty routine, one type of skin care product that we simply cannot overlook if we want soft, smooth, healthy, literally perfect skin, is a good, preferably natural, facial exfoliant!
So, Why Exfoliate?
Exfoliating your skin is one of the most essential steps toward a healthy complexion.
All skin types, ie. dry, oily, combination or perfectly balanced, benefit greatly from a regular exfoliation treatment. Exfoliating leads to immediately brighter, smoother looking skin that truly glows with a renewed freshness and vitality.
How do Facial Exfoliants Work?
Facial exfoliants break down and remove crusty old skin cells that build up over time on the surface of the skin. Removing these keratinized cells with an exfoliator quickly reveals the fresher, plumper, younger, healthier-looking skin cells underneath.
Additionally, as we age regeneration of our skin cells slows down dramatically. Facial exfoliants encourage speedier cell turnover, which means these newer, younger cells reach the surface much sooner. In addition, it enables better absorption and thereby a more effective treatment from the following serum or moisturizer.
Finally, for those with problem skin, a facial exfoliant prevents clogging of pores, which can otherwise lead to blackheads and acne.
Okay, So Which Facial Exfoliant Should I Use?
Well first it is important to understand the different types of exfoliants that are available.
A facial exfoliant can be either based on mechanical or chemical active constituents.
Mechanical types are often termed “scrubs”, and chemical exfoliants can be an enzyme masks, AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) fruit peels or BHA (beta-hydroxy acid). Then there are the seriously deep chemical peels that are performed only by a physician and usually under an anasthetic).
The key to figuring out which facial exfoliant is right for your skin is to first of all be absolutely sure it is the least irritating to your skin while being the most effective at producing the optimum results you wish for.
At-home exfoliating should be done with a gentle, natural organic facial exfoliant - one that has smooth, spherical beads (not shell granules of nuts - they're too abrasive to the face). Then, an enzyme mask is usually fairly gentle but we recommend speaking with your facialist about having this done.
Is There Anything I Should Avoid?
The answer to that is a resounding Yes!
For the face and neck, we strongly suggest avoiding any exfoliant that contains gritty abrasives (like those from nuts, seeds, nut shells or similar). These are not ideal ingredients for the thin, sensitive skin of the face and neck and they literally cause microscopic cuts (micro-lesions) to the surface of the skin, which can lead to other skin issues!
Although they have become popular in recent years, we also do strongly recommend avoiding AHA's. There is serious concern by the FDA over the long-term effect of this type of exfoliant. The first concern is the obvious irritation potential that comes from such a highly acidic product on the skin. The second is the sunburn risk increase. AHA's can cause severe photosensitivity - which means the skin's risk of sunburn is increased dramatically, leading to an obvious greater risk of skin cancer. The FDA is still studying the effects of long term AHA use and results are not yet conclusive, so until then it is best to avoid them.
What else to avoid? If any exfoliant (that is not administered under superivision of a qualified esthetician or physician) FEELS WARM, TINGLES, ITCHES, BURNS or CAUSES REDNESS it is, without question, irritating your skin (regardless of how the product is marketed or what the department store assistant says). This is not good! It certainly will not lead to the long-term health and beauty of your skin!
How do I Exfoliate?
Using a gentle mechanical facial exfoliant, simply apply a small amount to dampened hands and roll the fingertips over the skin in gentle, circular motions for about 30-60 seconds. Concentrate not just on oily, breakout-prone areas, but on dry skin areas too - this will remove dry, flaky skin cells and allow more moisture-filled, moisture absorbing cells to rise to the surface.
The most important thing to remember when exfoliating? BE GENTLE!
