Pearl – Know the Basics

Unlike other precious gemstones and substances like Gold, diamond and silver the Pearl come as ready to use condition. Pearl is broadly classified into two types, natural pearl and cultured pearl.
Until the 19th century, in the market there were only the natural pearls. After that with the advancement of new techniques and technologies, other types of pearls started coming to the market. A natural pearl is nothing but an accident; finding pearl means a speck of foreign matter, a microscopic sea creature and a grain of sand.
Pearl is the only gemstone available on the earth that is formed within a living animal usually formed in a mollusk or oyster. They have a foreign body artificially injected into it, over there it secretes a substance which is quite similar to that of its shell around the intruder, and for this reason pearl is quite slowly built.
In the recent time, different systems are applied to different types of pearls, which depend on where the pearls were grown. These systems apply to their luster and the appearance of any amount of surface defects. The thickness of the Nacre determines the strength and durability of a pearl. According to the Government of French Polynesia, minimum thickness should be 0.8mm.
