Turquoise In The Southwestern United States
The history of turquoise goes back nearly six thousand years when Egyptians found this beautiful stone in the Sinai peninsula. Archaeological digs around Egypt unearthed silver turquoise pendants and other turquoise jewelry in tombs of the royals and helped date the discovery of this mineral. A review of historical and archaeological records show that the history of turquoise and turquoise jewelry in the southwestern United States dates back just over 1,000 years when Native Americans first identified this stone in the area of Cerrillos near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Native tribes attached a spiritual significance to this stone, and believed that it helped them during hunting, healing, and war. Sometimes, they adorned their bows with turquoise. They did this partly for decoration, but mainly because they believed that it would keep their arrows true, and help with the hunt. They even went as far as grinding it to a fine powder, dissolving it in water, and drinking it to cure illness. Today we know that there is little scientific and medical theory to support this practice! Native Americans believed that this stone brings together heaven and earth, and so they included it as part of their culture and spirituality. Over the years, they refined their beliefs about this stone. In some cultures, turquoise is believed to represent the maternal side of society. Others such as the Zuni believe that it is a symbol of male power. Some consider turquoise to be a symbol of wealth. Incidentally, this belief is not restricted to Native Americans. In ancient Egypt, the ownership of turquoise was restricted to members with high standard in society, as so turquoise was often displayed as a show of your high status. Many communities around the world also believe that turquoise is an auspicious gift from one person to another, as well as a more spiritual gift to the gods.
The history of southwestern turquoise jewelry started when the European settlers arrived. They brought with them silver and the methods and techniques of silversmithing. Native artists soon mastered the techniques, and were able to combine turquoise with this precious metal and began to create some masterpieces. Over the years, they started to refine their art, and soon southwestern turquoise jewelry gained a legion of fans all over the globe. While classic Indian and southwestern designs continue to remain popular, some artists have started to diversify their creations. Some of the more innovative designs combine turquoise with other materials to create new designs. Common combinations include One of the most common examples of this is to include turquoise accent beads in a cultured pearl necklace .
